A Devotional for Courage: 7 Days of Bold Faith

By Henry Leroy Jenkins  ·  October 12, 2026  ·  8 min read

If you are searching for a devotional for courage, you are not alone. Many believers love God deeply and still feel their knees shake when it is time to speak up, start over, or step into something new. Courage is not the absence of fear. In the Bible, courage is trusting God in the middle of fear and moving forward anyway. This 7 day devotional for courage will walk you through one Scripture promise, one short reflection, and one prayer each day. By day 7, you will have a clear picture of what bold faith looks like and a simple rhythm you can keep long after the week ends.

What Courage Really Means in the Bible

The world defines courage as self confidence, grit, or the refusal to feel afraid. The Bible gives a deeper definition. Biblical courage is confidence in God, not in yourself. Every time God told someone to be strong and courageous, He gave the same reason: "I am with you." That is why this devotional works from the inside out. You are not trying to pump yourself up. You are learning to lean on the presence of God, who never leaves.

Notice the pattern in Scripture. God does not wait until we feel brave to send us. He commands courage first and supplies the strength to carry it out. Your feelings will catch up to your obedience if you keep walking. This week, you will learn to take one brave step at a time with God beside you.

How to Use This Devotional for Courage

This devotional for courage is built for busy people. Set aside 10 to 15 minutes each morning for 7 days. Read the Scripture slowly, read the short reflection, say the declaration out loud, and pray the prayer in your own words if you prefer. Then choose one brave step for the day and do it. Courage is a muscle. It grows every time you use it.

If you miss a day, do not quit. Just pick up where you left off. And if you want a longer journey when these 7 days are done, the 30 Day Fearless Faith Devotional continues this same rhythm for a full month.

Day 1: Courage Starts With God's Presence

"Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." (Joshua 1:9)

Joshua was facing the impossible task of leading Israel into the promised land after Moses died. God did not give him a battle plan first. He gave him a promise of His presence. Your courage today does not come from having every answer. It comes from knowing who goes with you. Whatever you are facing this week, God has already said the two words that change everything: "I am with thee."

Speak it: "I am strong and courageous today, because God is with me everywhere I go."

Pray: "Lord, thank You for going with me today. Help me to be strong and courageous in every situation I face. In Jesus name, amen."

Day 2: God Will Not Leave You

"Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee." (Deuteronomy 31:6)

Moses spoke these words to all of Israel, and then repeated them to Joshua personally. The promise is double strength because God knew the challenge was real. Giants, battles, and unknown territory were ahead. But the promise stood: He will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Today, name the thing you are afraid of. Then say the promise out loud over it. God has never failed you, and He is not starting today.

Speak it: "I will not fear, because God will never fail me and never forsake me."

Pray: "Father, when I feel alone in this fight, remind me that You are with me. I trust Your promise that You will never leave me. In Jesus name, amen."

Day 3: Fear Is Not From God

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." (2 Timothy 1:7)

Fear feels like it belongs to you, but this verse says it does not come from God. What God gave you instead is a three part gift: power, love, and a sound mind. Power to act. Love to put others first instead of shrinking back. A sound mind to think clearly instead of spiraling. When fear rises today, pause and ask: "Did this come from God?" If the answer is no, you have permission to refuse it and receive what He actually gave you.

Speak it: "God gave me power, love, and a sound mind. Fear is not from Him, and I do not receive it."

Pray: "Lord, thank You for the gifts You have given me. Fill me with Your power, Your love, and a calm, sound mind today. In Jesus name, amen."

Day 4: Ask the Right Questions

"The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 27:1)

David wrote this psalm while enemies surrounded him. Notice he did not start with positive thinking. He started with questions that answer themselves. If the LORD is my light, whom shall I fear? If the LORD is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid? The honest answer is: no one and nothing. Today, take the fear that is bothering you and run it through David's questions. Line it up next to who God is, and watch it shrink.

Speak it: "The Lord is my light, my salvation, and my strength. I have nothing to fear."

Pray: "Lord, You are my light in dark places and my strength when I am weak. I choose to trust You instead of fearing people or problems. In Jesus name, amen."

Day 5: God Will Hold You Up

"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness." (Isaiah 41:10)

This is one of the most quoted promises in the Bible, and for good reason. Count the "I will" statements: I am with thee, I am thy God, I will strengthen thee, I will help thee, I will uphold thee. Five guarantees in one verse. Courage is not you holding yourself together. It is being held. When you feel like you are about to fall, this verse says the right hand of God's righteousness is under you. You do not have to be strong enough. He is.

Speak it: "God strengthens me, helps me, and upholds me with His righteous right hand."

Pray: "Father, I admit I cannot do this in my own strength. Strengthen me, help me, and hold me up today. I rest in Your hands. In Jesus name, amen."

Day 6: Trust Him in the Moment of Fear

"What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee." (Psalm 56:3)

This is the shortest verse in our devotional and maybe the most honest. David does not say "if I am afraid." He says "what time I am afraid," because fear comes to everyone, even a man after God's own heart. The secret is what he does with it: "I will trust in thee." Courage is not never feeling afraid. Courage is choosing trust in the exact moment fear shows up. Today, when fear taps you on the shoulder, answer with those 8 words. Then take the step anyway.

Speak it: "When I am afraid, I will trust in God. I will not let fear decide for me."

Pray: "Lord, You know the moments when fear rises in me. In those moments, help me choose trust. Turn my fear into faith today. In Jesus name, amen."

Day 7: Finish What God Started in You

"Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD." (1 Chronicles 28:20)

David gave Solomon this charge as he handed over the work of building the temple. Look at the promise: God will be with you "until thou hast finished." He does not just start with you. He stays until the work is done. Whatever God has put in your heart, a dream, a calling, a difficult conversation, a fresh start, He will walk with you to the finish line. Strong and courageous is not just how you begin. It is how you finish.

Speak it: "I will be strong and courageous and finish what God has given me to do."

Pray: "Lord, thank You for these 7 days. Make me bold to finish what You have started in my life. I will not quit in the middle. In Jesus name, amen."
