Facing Fear With God: A Practical 5 Day Plan

By Henry Leroy Jenkins  ·  October 7, 2026  ·  8 min read

Facing fear with God is not about pretending you are not afraid. It is about refusing to face the fear alone. Most of us either run from fear as fast as we can, or grit our teeth and white knuckle through it in our own strength. Neither works for long. The third way is to walk through the fear with God right beside you.

This is not theory. The Bible is full of people who were terrified and kept going anyway: Moses stuttered, Gideon hid, David wept, Peter sank. Yet God used every one of them. The difference was never the absence of fear. The difference was the presence of God.

Below is a practical 5 day plan you can start today: one focus, one Scripture, one action, and one short prayer per day. Just one honest step per day, with God.

Why Facing Fear With God Changes Everything

Before we start, here is why this works. Fear grows in isolation: the longer you sit alone with a scary thought, the bigger it gets. Bringing God into it does three things.

First, it changes your company. Psalm 23:4 says, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me." Notice the promise is not that God removes the valley. The promise is that He walks through it with you. Facing fear with God means the scariest path is never a lonely one.

Second, it changes your identity. Fear whispers that you are weak, unqualified, and alone. God says something different. Isaiah 41:10 says, "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God." When you face fear with God, you face it as someone who is held, not as someone who is abandoned.

Third, it changes your outcome. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." Fear is not your portion. Power, love, and a sound mind are. That is the trade God offers you every single day.

Facing Fear With God: The 5 Day Plan

Work through these five days in order. If you miss a day, do not quit. Just pick up where you left off. God is not grading your performance. He is walking with you.

Day 1: Name the Fear Out Loud

Fear loses power when it is named. The thing you cannot say out loud will keep running your life from the shadows. So day one is simple and hard at the same time: tell the truth about what scares you.

Get alone with God and say it plainly, not the polished version. The real one. "God, I am afraid this diagnosis will not get better." "God, I am afraid I will fail at this job." Whatever it is, put words on it in His presence.

David did exactly this in the Psalms. Psalm 56:3 says, "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee." David does not say "if" I am afraid. He says "when." Fear is expected. The plan for it is trust.

Today's action: Write down the one fear that has been loudest this week, on paper not just in your head. Then write Psalm 56:3 underneath it.

Today's prayer: "Lord, I am afraid of (name it). I am done hiding it. I bring it to You today because I know You are with me. Help me trust You with it. Amen."

Day 2: Replace the Lie With the Truth

Every fear carries a lie underneath it: "I am not enough." "God has forgotten me." "It is too late for me." These lies feel like facts because fear has repeated them so many times. Day two is about answering the lie with Scripture.

Romans 12:2 says, "be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." Transformation starts in the mind. You cannot think your way out of fear with willpower alone, but you can replace a lie with a promise, one verse at a time.

Take the fear you named on day one and ask: what lie is hiding under it? Then find the truth that answers it. If the lie is "I am alone," the truth is Deuteronomy 31:6: God will not fail you nor forsake you. If the lie is "I am too weak," the truth is that His strength is made perfect in weakness.

If you want help building this habit, the 30 Day Fearless Faith Devotional walks you through a full month of replacing fear with Scripture, one day at a time.

Today's action: Identify the lie under your fear and write the Bible truth that answers it. Read that truth out loud 3 times today.

Today's prayer: "Father, fear has been telling me (the lie). Today I choose Your truth instead: (the verse). Renew my mind. Let Your Word be louder than my worry. Amen."

Day 3: Take One Small Step of Obedience

Fear tells you to wait until you feel ready. God tells you to move while trusting Him. Day three is about action, but not giant action. Just one small step of obedience in the direction God is calling you.

God's answer to a terrified Joshua was not a feeling of courage. It was a command with a promise. Joshua 1:9 says, "Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."

Courage in the Bible is not the absence of fear. It is obedience in the middle of fear. So what is one small step you can take today? Make the call. Send the application. Have the conversation. Small steps taken with God beat big plans made in fear.

Today's action: Choose one small, concrete step and do it before the day ends. Tell a trusted friend so they can celebrate with you.

Today's prayer: "Lord, I do not feel ready, but I will obey anyway. I take this step (name it) trusting that You go with me wherever I go. Give me courage for the next step too. Amen."

Day 4: Rest in His Presence

After a day of action, day four is about rest. This surprises people. We expect the plan to keep pushing us forward, but God builds rest into the rhythm of courage. You cannot fight fear on an empty soul.

Jesus said in John 14:27, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." That peace is received, not earned.

Today, slow down on purpose. Spend 15 unhurried minutes with God, no agenda, no rehearsing your worries. Just sit with Him and read Psalm 27:1 slowly: "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" Let each question settle into your heart.

Many believers pair quiet time with journaling. The Dream Bigger Journal gives you guided space to record what God speaks to you, so you can look back and see how far He has brought you.

Today's action: Spend 15 minutes in quiet with God. Read Psalm 27:1 slowly, then sit in silence. Write down anything He brings to your mind.

Today's prayer: "Jesus, You promised me Your peace. I receive it now. Quiet my troubled heart. I am not afraid, because You are here. Amen."

Day 5: Move Forward in Love, Not Fear

The final shift: fear makes your life about avoiding pain; love makes it about serving others. On day five, you turn outward.

1 John 4:18 says, "perfect love casteth out fear." Notice the direction. Love does not just comfort fear. It casts it out. When your focus moves from "what if something bad happens to me" to "who can I love and serve today," fear loses its grip because it no longer has your full attention.

Ask God today: who needs encouragement from me? A text to a struggling friend, a meal for a neighbor, a kind word for a coworker. These small acts of love are spiritual warfare. Every time you choose love over fear, you prove to your own heart that fear is not in charge.

Today's action: Do one intentional act of love for someone else today, because of what God has done for you this week.

Today's prayer: "Father, Your perfect love has been casting out my fear all week. Now let that love flow through me. Show me who needs it today. Amen."

A Prayer for When Fear Comes Back

Fear will come back. Finishing a 5 day plan does not mean you will never be afraid again. It means you now know what to do when fear knocks. Keep this prayer where you can find it:

"Lord, fear is knocking again, but I know who lives in this house. You have not given me the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. I name this fear before You: (name it). I replace its lie with Your truth: (your verse). I take one step of obedience today: (your step). And I rest in the promise that You are with me wherever I go. In Jesus' name, amen."

That prayer is the whole plan in one paragraph. Name it. Replace it. Step through it. Rest in Him. Repeat as often as needed.

Keep Going: Your Next Steps

Five days is a beginning, not a finish line. Here is how to keep going:

Facing fear with God never means you stop feeling afraid. It means fear stops getting the final vote. David was afraid and still trusted. Joshua was afraid and still led. You can be afraid and still move forward, because the God who was with them is with you.

Fear thou not, for He is with thee. Now take the first step.
